Chase
Run. Keep running.
A large man runs down a poorly trodden path. Behind him, the ever present crashing of hooves through underbrush. His mind blank but for the basic instinct to run. There are no thoughts, only a primal awareness telling him that the sounds are coming closer. He is not running fast enough. He spares no attention for the chirping birds. Not a single glance goes up towards the beautiful sky. Every fibre in this man’s body is focused on a single thing. Escape.
The path ends, and the man starts to dodge the trees. He pushes himself aside with four mighty arms when he cannot dodge. The hooves grow slightly more distan

Williams mind wanders. What day is it? Can he afford to sleep in a few minutes longer?
A dull pain in his head reminds him he did not go to sleep by choice. What happened again? He must have hit his head against something. No matter. Maybe sleeping some more would be a good idea.
He moves a little to get more comfortable, but a grassy hillside with pebbles everywhere does not offer a lot of comfort. He vaguely remembers being scared. He absentmindedly swats at some pebbles to make room for himself. Ah, much better.
Briefly his mind is filled with an image of blinding light. What was that? Hasn’t he seen that before?

Hadari
It’s quiet in the Hadari. The last of today’s patrons have just gone up to their room for the night, and Ed starts preparing for the next day. He looks at the key rack, and notices one key is still hanging there. The one for William’s room.
‘Hm, I guess he isn’t back yet. I sure hope the kid’s okay. I really thought he might actually make it in this world. Ah, to be adventuring again. But that danger is nothing for me anymore. Not since…’ Ed subconsciously moves his hand to the weathered and rusty necklace he wears underneath his clothing. ‘Samara…’ He sighs and continu

Encounter in the night
As the evening falls and the sun steadily makes its way towards the horizon, the sky is colored a fiery red. William spots the still distant forest in the dwindling light. He should set up camp soon. He moves a few hundred yards away from the road and starts building the tent. The surroundings don’t offer the opportunity of a campfire, so when the last remnants of sunlight disappear only the moon and stars bathe the hillside in a dim light.
William, satisfied with the camp, goes inside, crawls into the sleeping bag, and closes his eyes. Tired from a day of walking, it doesn’t take long for him to start dozi

The magic hunt
The next day, William wakes up early in the morning and makes his way downstairs.
“Mornin’ William.” The familiar voice of Ed greets him. “Going out hunting again today? I could really use some more of that boar meat you brought last time.”
“Yes, I was planning to go out and try my new tricks. If I find a boar, I’ll see if I can kill it. Anyway, I’ll have some breakfast.”
“Sure, coming right up. What new tricks did you learn?”
“I spent yesterday at the Mage School. Turns out I have a talent for it.”
“Good for you! Truly a rare skill these d

William pushes the doors open, and behind them is a classroom with a wizard in front and four students besides William. The arch mages were right when they said there aren’t many people in Antidae who become wizards.
The teacher addresses William: “Hello. What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to take same basic courses on mana usage and spellcasting.”
“First time wizarding eh? Well, you’ve come to the right place, I was just getting started with an introduction on magic in general.”
“Great, I’ll have a seat.”
“All right, as I was about to say, the magic her

Old hobbies, new skills
The next morning William wakes up feeling great. Money in the pocket, confidence, respect. Yesterday changed a lot for him. And today will be even better: It’s time to visit the Mage School. Get someone to evaluate his potential for using magic. Probably a pretty common skill in a world like this. He grabs his gear, and makes his way downstairs.
When he walks up to the bar, Ed greets him: “Good morning kiddo, sleep well?”
“Good morning to you too Ed. Yeah, I slept pretty good. How did the meat business go yesterday?”
“Boy, I cooked those guys half your supply. If things keep up I

Hunting.
That night, William spends the last of his money on food. It’s imperative he gather some more money to pay the next night’s rent and buy some food to eat. And that means killing monsters. In order to prepare himself for the hunt, William decides to spend some time reading the codex entries for combat, as well as studying the map of the area around the city for some good hunting grounds.
Surprisingly, the codex says little about actual combat. He had expected entire books worth of tips tricks and rules, but the only thing in there is a mention that death is permanent. Great, good to know. The map doesnt really mention any
Training time
William wakes up when the sun shines brightly onto his face through the “window”. He opens his eyes and looks around, only to find out that he is in fact in Sunder, and none of this was a dream. Now that it has been proven three times, William accepts the facts and decides to make the best of his life here. There is no need to get dressed, because he never took off his clothes. Then there’s nothing left but go and have breakfast. He grabs his codex and backpack, and leaves the room. After walking down the stairs and eating breakfast, green goo again, he hands the barkeep 10 Aetha to prolong his stay here. Now i

Sunder.
William carefully stands up, testing his legs and balance as he rises. Apparently his legs have recovered from the shock, and he can stand without falling again. He looks around one last time, and starts walking towards the exit. The walls look like they were built yesterday, clean and perfectly smooth. No missing pieces of stone, no crumbling, weak spots or any sign of wear and tear. As he nears the edge of the square, the sun disappears behind the walls, and he suddenly feels a cold breeze. No way he can survive on the street here, the nights are too cold, and who knows what type of aliens lurk the streets at night. He passes under

The sound of metal on metal echoed through the arena. Sparks flew. The air tasted like ozone.
Two figures fought in the center of the pit, lined with spectator seats raised above it. Everything was black carbon and glowing neon. The floor of the arena was a grid of small hexagons and the soft colours shining in between. Several parts of it were damaged or stained with blood, and some chunks went missing altogether, giving a view straight down into the abyss. Below were only darkness and stars.
One of the combatants was Lord Maximus, the knight in gold. His armour was damaged, but not broken, and his gauntlets gripped two ornate golden sword

White.
All the world is swirling white
The icy wind whips flurries of snow back and forth, up and around, endless and indifferent. It whirls beneath a half-lit sky of steel-grey clouds. It howls over the snow-cloaked crests and ridges of the land, sucking spirals of fresh-fallen powder in its wake. It chills all it touches, and here upon the Aerghan wastes, it touches everything.
Soft as it is, the powdery, snow hardly even whispers when cloven hooves plough through it. The minotaurs, in turn, are barely slowed by the drifts around their legs as they march steadily onward, as enduring as the land itself.
